YOUR INSTRUCTOR: RAINBOW
Rainbow by name and nature, this full bloomed rose knows how to shimmy, bump and grind like an untended coffee grinder! Recently described by one of the judges at Burlesque Idol 2017 as ‘ridiculous in all the right ways,’ this classically trained, Canberra-based performer stumbled across burlesque while attempting to find a fitness class with pizzazz (and jazz hands). Since then she has grown as a performer developing skills with feather and silk fans. Following her success at the 2016 Burlesque Idol Canberra heat where she was voted runner up by the audience, Rainbow has sashayed her way across venues in Canberra, Sydney and Wollongong performing in the Alice in Wonderland Party with Jazida, Shaken and Stirred, Secret Soiree, Females on Form, Like a Virgin and the Comedy Burlesque Hour, among others. Her acts are known for their originality and fun choreography. Described as a ‘sparkly cannon of chaos’, Rainbow is a diverse performer with more than 20 years dance training in Broadway jazz, ballet, salsa and samba, among other dance styles. Recently she competed and won the Burlesque Idol Australia 2017 Newcastle heat and went on to win the Grand Final where she was also awarded the prize for best comedic act. Currently she has been focused on hat juggling which is doing wonders for her fadobadahs (chicken wings).
Rainbow will be holding various Burlesque Workshops in Townsville JUNE 10th and JUNE 11th.
These burlesque workshops include:
WORKSHOP 1: Showgirl Style with Rainbow (June 10 Saturday 1-2pm)
Class Description: Showgirl Style is a Broadway Jazz dance workshop for people keen on exploring the dance style developed in the 1950s and popularised by Bob Fosse. In this workshop we will be focusing on Broadway Jazz technique with particular focus on developing our kicks and turns. You will also learn a fun choreography to ‘One’ from ‘A Chorus Line’.
What to wear: comfortable exercise clothes that enable you to kick and turn with ease; a top or bowler hat for the routine (a cheap one from a $2 store is appropriate); and dance heals as there will be strutting and lots of it
Level: all levels
WORKSHOP 2: Feather Fan-tastic with Rainbow (June 10 Saturday 2-3pm)
Class description: Burlesque feather fan dances originated with Sally Rand and Faith Bacon in the 1930s. At the time they were used as a tantalising way to tease the audience with graceful glimpses of skin expertly concealed and revealed by the performer. Today feather fans are also used to show the passion and the fan skills of the performer as much as to tease. In this workshop you will learn a variety of feather fan techniques including holds, switches, the clam, and windmill among others all while learning a fun group fan dance routine.
What to wear: comfortable clothes for dancing (preferably no long sleeves); feather fans (if you have them, if not bring a pair of small Spanish or Chinese fans); dance heels are optional.
Level: all skill levels welcome
WORKSHOP 3: Burlesque Competition Preparation with Rainbow (June 11 Sunday 10-11am)
Class description: In this workshop you will learn some helpful tips in how to prepare for a Burlesque competition so that you can present your best performance possible on the day. The workshop will be a combination of movement and theory. I will talk about how I prepared in the months leading up to, and on the day of, the Burlesque Idol competition 2017 so that I performed the best I could (and also ensured that I had a lot of fun while doing so). Topics covered will include: competition application, act development, rehearsal, practice, performer fitness (mental and physical) and what to do on the day of competition.
Clothing: comfortable clothing, notebook and pen.
Level: open to all
